Update: Final Sample!

Just wanted to show you the final sample of the folded mini I just finished. I keep calling it the folded mini, but this one is actually the longer version. I need to think of an appropriate name! I made it up in a plain black interlock knit, the perfect fabric if you ask me. It holds its zipper well and it shows off the folds very nicely. I've styled it in three different ways to give you some ideas of how to wear it.

I've tried out two different methods for securing the folds, and you can see the difference in the skirt. The bottom three folds are method 1, the upper three are method 2. I'll tell you more about that when we release the pattern. I've also made some adjustments to the waistband again. I joined the back and front waistband pieces to eliminate the seams at the sides, which makes it more simple and less bulky. I also used a shorter zipper, 16 cm instead of 18. Don't worry, all the instructions will be in both metric and imperial :) I also made up this last one to check and adjust my instructions, and draft the basis of the illustrations that go with the instructions. It's going slow but there's progress! Tilly told me her first pattern cost her 6 months to complete, which is probably realistic since she has a job on the side too.

We'll soon be ready to get this out to pattern testers. When we are there'll be an opportunity to test this if you like, I'll get back to you on that. Stef has started on the branding, so I also hope to be able to reveal our name and logo soon! I already have ideas for three other patterns so I hope that after this first one, everything will go a whole lot faster. Starting my own pattern company is still the best decision I have ever made. I have never before so conciously chosen the path that I get most excited about. I can recommend it!

  1. I love it!! I think your right about the fabric choice as it does show off the folds beautifully in this version.

  2. beautiful!
well, i don't know for sure if i want to risk by myself with a so "stratified" skirt: i'm not skinny as you and i fear that i could remind the "michelin's man" ;DD
But, on you it's absolutely perfect!

    1. Yes I'm curious to see what it looks like on larger sizes. My hips are not the skinniest though, they're a Burda size 42.

  3. firstly, thank you so much for your kind description of me in your last post, i have a response perculating - just need time to actually sit down & type!
secondly, and more to the point, i really like this version. The mini is great, I've loved it since I saw the original mustard yellow one but adding this length as a variation is really going to open up the pattern to a wider range of people. Looks great in a the plain black, shows off the folds nicely.
Also, excellent pairing with the cropped front top :-)

  4. I like this length and it looks great with the coloured stockings. I must say, the 'so stratified' name mentioned above is pretty clever! It's brilliant that you are following your dream :)

    1. Thanks Meg! I'll do a tutorial on how to lengthen it, it's not that straightforward when looking at the pattern.

  13. I jumped over here from BurdaStyle. I'm so excited to see you're launching a pattern company with this pattern! I pinned your mini ages ago, but I haven't gotten around to making it yet... Too many other things on my list and not enough time! Hopefully having a pattern will be just the thing I need to get started making such a cool skirt!

  19. Wow!

  20. Hi, just wondering if you think it definitely needs a zip? I made the shorter version, and I absolutely love it, and have no problems getting it on without a zip. My mum wants me to make a longer version for her, but I don't like doing zips!

    1. The zip is not necessary! It depends on your measurements. If you have a small waist and big hips it would be a little bit harder to get on, but the design is not high waisted so you'd probably be fine. Glad you like the skirt!
