I almost started hemming my coat, but then I realised how stupid that would be. I hadn't seen it on photo's yet. And I hadn't asked you what fit issues you see. How could I forget how important these things are?
The pattern is Burda 10/2012 #106. It is not intended as a winter coat, but I lined it with some very thin fiberfill. It still needs buttons (14!). I'd love to hear what you think!
About the front: I'm not sure if there is too much room around the bust area. And should these princess seams be located so far to the sides? And I'm thinking it could do with some more shaping at the sides and maybe also at the princess seams around the waist.
About the back: There seems to be too much room at the upper back. Or do I need this room to be able to move? And what about the extra room around the lower armscyes? And there seems to be some pulling at the sleeve heads. Would you fix that? And how?
Are there any (other) fit issues you see? Please enlighten me, wise readers!
First off, I think the color is magnificent on you. Excellent choice! Secondly, I know you said you aren't planning on using it as a winter coat, but would you ever wear a thick sweater/layer underneath? That might fix some of the room at the upper back and eliminate the need for waist shaping. I think your sleeves have been set in beautifully, fyi!
ReplyDeleteThanks Meg! I meant that I am planning to use it as a winter coat, even though the pattern was not intended as one. You have a opint about the sweater. It is not easy to find the right balance between snug and roomy for sweaters. I'll see what it does when I wear a big sweater!
DeleteYou need the room at the upper back to cycle! Otherwise you won't be able to grab the handlebar.
ReplyDeleteGood point! Very important criterium in this country :)
DeleteHi there, I found your blog through Gail's blog (today's agenda)...I agree, that coat is a great color on you! I think I would try taking in the princess seams in the front bust area for a better fit, and maybe the back princess seams as well. Put your arms out as if you were riding a bike and see if it's comfortable! :) The waist looks good. from the front the sleeve heads look great. Maybe the issue is the seam on the sleeve?
ReplyDeleteHi Andrienne, thanks for your tips! I took in the back princess seams, and that made both the back and the front better. The sleeve heads are fixed too, the problem was excess fabric in the sleeves. Would never have guessed, but my sewing teacher pointed it out.
DeleteThe colour is wonderful! I think that the puckering in the back might have to do with the side pieces sitting too low/far from centre back and/or the armhole opening being too small.
ReplyDeleteAlso, for a professional and more durable finish, I would topstitch the pocket flaps and next time even cut the lining smaller so it would not show.
Happy sewing!
Thanks for your feedback! I've taken in the two back seams and it's much better now.
DeleteI could topstitch the pocketflaps, but I like the cleaner look it has now. I'll tell more about the flap lining in the final post about this coat. It wasn't supposed to show, but I sort of failed :)
